Textron Aviation and Australia-based Pel-Air announced a purchase contract this week that will see Pel-Air receive five twin-engine Beechcraft King Air 350 air ambulance turboprops configured for multi-stretcher operations beginning this year. Textron owns the Beechcraft, Cessna, and Hawker brands. Pel-Air was formed in 1984, and is based at the Sydney Airport near Mascot, a Sydney suburb in New South Wales. The company provides aeromedical transport as well as chartered tours, freight charter, corporate jet charter, and fly in/fly out charter services.

Big In Australia

Pel-Air’s new Beechcraft 350s will replace a current fleet of King Air B200 and B350 aircraft used to support NSW Ambulance. Pel-Air will base the aircraft at Sydney Airport and use them to provide emergency services in NSW as part of contracted air ambulance service provided to NSW Air Ambulance, a government agency. Pel-Air’s turboprop and jet fleet also includes Saab, Westwind, and Learjet aircraft.

According to Textron, Australia is host to the largest King Air fleet in the Asia Pacific region, and the King Air is one of the most popular turboprop models in the country, where Textron supports roughly 200 King Airs. The company says the King Air 350/350ER’s air ambulance configuration’s large, versatile cabin can accommodate custom medical cabinets, multiple crew seating options, and optional powered loader for patient boarding. Pel-Air’s models will feature an aft cargo door and heavy-weight options for additional performance abilities, Textron says.

Eugene Lee, Pel-Air COO, says the King Airs have proven particularly adept at air ambulance operations in NSW “where much of the need is to and from rural areas and unimproved runways that dominate our service area.”
