Diamond Aircraft’s Upcoming Five-Seat Piston DA50 RG Earns 2020 Aerokurier Innovation Award
Diamond Aircraft announced in late March that its DA50 RG, part of the DA50 aircraft program it introduced in 2017, recently won a 2020 Aerokurier Innovation Award in the best new aircraft category. The award is one of several awards determined by voting among readers of the monthly German magazine Aerokurier, which covers general, business, and other civil aviation topics. Other notable Innovation Award winners included Pilatus, Cirrus, and Embraer in the Jet/Turboprop category.
A Postponed Unveiling
Diamond Aircraft has been working toward basic certification this summer from the European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) for its five-seat DA50, which features retractable gear and a 300-horsepower (224-kilowatt) CD-300 jet-fuel engine from Continental. Diamond’s DA50 program originally included five-, six-, and seven-seat versions in single- and twin-engine piston models, including the four-seat DA40, four-seat DA42, and seven-seat DA62 models. Roughly a year ago, Diamond changed course with the program’s engine concept, and partnered with Continental to equip the DA50 with the CD-300 Jet-A1 engine.
Diamond Aircraft says it intended to unveil the DA50 RG at this year’s AERO Friedrichshafen trade show set for April, but the event was cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. As such, Diamond Aircraft says it has postponed the DA50 RG’s launch for a “more suitable time.”
