Gulfstream Aerospace reported in late June that it recently entered the 200th G280 into service. Since it became commercially available in 2012, the jet has accrued roughly 236,100 flight hours as of April 2020. (Photo courtesy of Gulfstream.)

Gulfstream Aerospace says that as of April 2020, the in-service fleet of its 10-passenger super-midsize G280 business jet had amassed nearly 236,100 flight hours, completed 145,000 landings, and obtained a 99.81% dispatch reliability rate from the National Business Aviation Association (NBAA). The G280 reached another milestone in late June, when Gulfstream announced that the 200th G280 has entered service.

A Record-Breaker

Introduced in 2009 and entered into service in 2012, the G280 also obtained FAA certification in 2012, followed closely by European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) certification the following year. Through the decades, the jet has charted more than 75 city-pair records, including the latest one in February: A G280 flew 2,735 nautical miles (5,065 kilometers) from Vermont to England in six hours and 10 minutes at an average speed of Mach 0.83. The jet has a 3,600-nautical-mile (6,667-kilometer) range at a long-range cruise speed of Mach 0.80. Its maximum speed is Mach 0.85.

Gulfstream says it developed the G280 years ago in the same manner as its other aircraft, namely seeking customer input via its Gulfstream Customer Advisory Board. That feedback led to a new wing, tail, engine, and interior, Gulfstream says. Gulfstream President Mark Burns, says that just as when the G280 entered the marketplace in 2012, the jet’s combination of “superior performance, comfort, safety, and efficiency” still “puts it atop the mid-cabin class.”

The G280’s interior features up to two living areas and 19 large oval windows. The cockpit features the Gulfstream PlaneView280 flight deck and an Enhanced Flight Vision System implementation, leaving the jet certified for steep-approach operations and low-visibility conditions.
