Bombardier announced this week it is now taking reservations from Challenger 300 and 350 aircraft operators for free installations beginning mid-2021 of its Smart Link Plus Box, part of its data-driven Smart Link Plus connected aircraft program. (Photo courtesy of Bombardier.)

The Smart Link Plus connected aircraft program Bombardier first introduced with its flagship Global 7500 model is now available to Bombardier Challenger 300 and 350 operators. The onboard component of the program is the Smart Link Plus Box, developed with GE Aviation. Bombardier says the box acts as an “advanced health monitoring unit” that feeds data to on-ground operators, enabling them to stay connected to in-flight aircraft to help “prioritize and proactively troubleshoot essential fault notifications on aircraft with in-flight alerts.” The aerospace company says that more than 95% of current Global 7500 customers have enrolled in Smart Link Plus services.

Proactive Troubleshooting

Challenger 300 and 350 operators can now reserve a free Smart Link Plus Box for installations that will begin in mid-2021. Bombardier says availability for other Challenger and Global models will follow. Customers must sign into an online tool that enables 24/7 access to data on personal devices via a Bombardier app. Bombardier’s 24/7 Customer Response Centre and team members can also offer support via a data-visualization tool. The program requires having a SATCOM or ATG cabin internet system installed to enable in-flight functionality. Customers must also subscribe to an annual connected aircraft service package. A 15% discount is available to new and existing Smart Parts and Smart Pubs customers.

Bombardier says monitoring in-flight aircraft enables ground crews to help pinpoint root causes of fault notifications without distracting the flight crew. Smart Link Plus automatically transfers takeoff, landing, and in-flight fault notifications together with contextual data to users. After landing, full flight data is automatically made accessible for troubleshooting more complex faults. System benefits include enhanced aircraft availability and operational efficiency, better and faster data-driven maintenance decisions, and ability to proactively dispatch parts and technicians.
